    Elput: A Libinput Abstraction for EFL

    Input is something generally taken for granted, but it’s not without issues. While working on a new EFL library for Direct Rendering, the community decided that having the same libinput code duplicated across multiple internal subsystems like Ecore_Fb, Ecore_Drm, etc. would be a great effort to maintain in the future. To reduce this effort, Elput was created. Introducing Elput Elput is a library designed to abstract all the gory details of using libinput, and it provides a central API that can be used to initialize, iterate, and manipulate various input devices found on a system. These can include keyboards, pointers, touch screens, and any other input device that libinput supports.     IoTivity is Getting Ready for Automotive

    Samsung has recently intensified its focus on improving the driving experience with the launch of Connect Auto. As a coincidence, I tried to put together different efforts from our group to into an open connected car experiment. Check out this video which shows a DIY Tizen fan that’s controlled from an Automotive Linux system and Tizen TM1 mobile device: It’s All About Interoperability It might look a bit over-engineered with all of the devices in this demonstration, but the purpose is to validate communication between devices on a network (WiFi, BT, BLE) in various contexts. Of course, it’s possible to adapt the DIY fan to use an automatic gate mechanism or something else to interact with the driver, or it could even use cloud services that ensure the necessary level of security.   • As I illustrated in my previous article, the current capability of the Linux Kernel scheduler is far from giving us the most efficient use of the hardware we have; this needs to be fixed. The kernel community is hard at work attempting to fix this issue, and we should understand how they intend to do so to make sure that user space applications will be ready to take advantage of it. The Direction Taken by the Kernel Community Obviously this is easier said than done; even so, there is huge work being completed in the Kernel community to fix this issue. The solution is simple to describe, but very hard to implement as it touches one of the core components of Linux.   • One of the great things about being in the Open Source Group at Samsung is that we get to work on cool stuff both inside and outside the company. As we’ve done in past years, Samsung is sponsoring a project in Jay Borenstein’s CS210 course at Stanford. The objective of CS210 is to expose students to corporate development practices by giving them real world design and development projects, pushing the envelope of technology and building something cool.     Wrapping Up A Productive Week in Seoul

    This week has been packed full of presentations, technical meetings, and professional networking in Seoul, South Korea. We sent more than a dozen people to attend the Korea Linux Forum, the Linux Kernel Summit, and the Samsung Open Source Conference and we had representation for nearly all of the open source projects we are involved with including EFL, Wayland, IoTivity, FFmpeg, Gstreamer, and more. We met countless talented individuals and we are extremely happy to get the chance to interact with Korean professionals as we seek to increase our interaction with individuals who could be valuable to the open source technology we rely on.     Considering that our primary headquarters is in South Korea, it only makes sense that open source conferences in Seoul are a bit of a big deal to us. Next week we have two major conferences there: Korea Linux Forum and the Samsung Open Source Conference (SOSCON).  We are pulling all the stops for these conferences and are sending most of our team for three days of technical discussions and networking.     LinuxCon Europe Wrap Up

    We sent a handful of representatives to LinuxCon EU in Dublin, Ireland this week, and we found quite a lot of value in doing so. Between attending sessions, networking with other experts in the open source industry over Guinness and Irish Whiskey, and meeting people at our booth there was quite a lot for us to do. Buzzwords Abound Its a given that any technical conference will feature a few topics that the industry is focusing on at the time. For some time now, IoT has been perhaps the biggest topic in open source technology and Linux. This conference was no exception with numerous keynotes and sessions that covered IoT platforms including IoTivity, OpenWRT, and more.     Come Get Your SSL/TLS Encryption and More, in This Week’s Wrap Up

    Open Source Wrap Up: September 12-18, 2015 Let’s Encrypt Issues First SSL/TLS Certificate. Let’s Encrypt is a Linux Foundation Collaborative project that will serve as a certificate authority that makes SSL/TLS certificate provisioning much simpler. The project will distribute free SSL/TLS certificates, which will simplify the process of setting up encrypted communications over the web; this is something many leading tech companies have been pushing for heavily in recent years. The first certificate has been issued to their own test website; currently it requires visitors to install an ISRG root certificate, but the project is working with IdenTrust, a certificate authority, to cross sign the project’s certificates. Once this process is finished, all certificates issued by Let’s Encrypt will be trusted across the web. The project will gradually roll more certificates out to pre-selected websites in the coming weeks before opening up the process to the general public on November […]
